In an attempt to distill the most critical elements of social media strategy into easily digestible bits, I managed to identify 3 very important success factors:

Visibility

How easy it is for people to find your brand online.

(Examples: SERP ranking, inbound links, social media presence)

Engagement

How relevant and connected your brand is.

(Examples: Twitter followers, tweets, comments, daily active users)

Trust

How trustworthy your brand is in delivering its value proposition.

(Examples: eBay PowerSeller, people who’d recommend you to their friends, retweets)

Therefore,

Social media success = Visibility x Engagement x Trust
